Anticipated Benefits
Based on the outcome of this study, the research outcomes will be directly used by Iowa city, county, and DOT engineers in making decisions regarding the use of Otta seal surfacing for Iowa low-volume roadways. Several environmental, economic, societal, and institutional benefits have been reported with the use of Otta seals: reduced depletion of non-renewable resources, enhanced durability, favorable life-cycle cost-benefit ratio in comparison to more commonly used seal coat surfaces, and so on. The results from this study will be beneficial to the Iowa counties for providing cost-effective bituminous surface treatment alternative for Iowa county road construction and rehabilitation (both gravel and paved roads). Especially, Iowa county engineers will utilize the recommended technical specification draft to be developed in this project for bid advertisement, contracting, construction QC/QA on the future Otta seal projects in their counties.
