Anticipated Benefits
Iowa residents pay for the construction of bridges with an expected life span. Damage by users of the system reduces the life of the bridge and increases the demand on the public purse if the person damaging the bridge is not determined and cost recovery action taken at the time. The second benefit is to determine bridge safety after a strike.

Project Abstract
Bridges are the critical element of any transportation network. The bridge stock in the USA is reaching an age where monitoring and maintenance of the structure is becoming critical to providing the least cost, but effective, system to maintain the long-term economic health of any state’s transportation system, including Iowa. Vehicles and shipping that strike an element of a bridge generally reduces the remaining economic life of the bridge. This proposal provides a method to observe bridge strikes on a test bridge in Iowa. The data collected permits rapid notification to Iowa DOT of the strike, in less than 1 to 8 seconds and the collection of photographic documentation of the incident. The data gathered in this research will demonstrate the utility of the measurement system in being able to give notice of bridge strikes within a few seconds of the event. The secondary benefit is the data provided in terms of long-term damage rates on the bridge which will allow for a better estimate of the expected life of the bridge, leading to a refined management plan.
